Prior to achieving independence, our country was subjected for nearly two centuries. The people of this country took up arms in protest of the oppression and torture inflicted by the ruling group from West Pakistan, motivated by their love for freedom.
Farmers, workers, students, teachers, artists, writers, and youths spontaneously joined the fight, which quickly escalated into a bloody war. Even those who were unable to directly participate in the liberation war found ways to help the liberators.
Through guerilla warfare and direct confrontations, the freedom fighters persisted and defeated the Pakistani army. A heavy joint forces attack in early December resulted in the defeat and retreat of the Pakistani army. Finally, on December 16, 1971, 93,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered, resulting in the establishment of a sovereign and independent Bangladesh.
To honor these valiant freedom fighters who made enormous sacrifices to secure Bangladesh’s freedom, the government has launched a number of initiatives. We will cherish the memory of these brave sons of the nation for the rest of our lives.
